About
Who We Are:
QB likes to have fun and talk community building. We reject the notion that the queer community of Central Ohio must exist in its current fragmented form, isolated from the ideas, beliefs and stories that we have in common. To lessen our isolation we strive to create fun, interesting, and educational programming for any and all who wish to participate. We’ll dance, bike, cook, stretch, watch, read, talk, sip and do whatever else sounds fun while keeping an eye out for those special moments that inspire conversation, create connections and cultivate friendships across cultures, ages, genders and any other lines that are used to separate us. Check us out, participate, share us with your friends or share your ideas about what we can do…and oh, yes, there will be glitter.
Mission Statement:
Queer Behavior is a multi-modal network dedicated to uniting Columbus’ queer community through interacting with and organizing within the queer community; informing the queer community of events, issues, and news; and organizing events, education and outreach for the community and Central Ohio. While all inclusive, Queer Behavior is, at its core, a network for self-identified queer peoples. All events created or sponsored by Queer Behavior are dedicated Safe(r) Spaces.
Standards:
-All events, meetings, and collaborators adhere to the principles of a safe(r) space
-We will not tolerate racism, classism, misogyny, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism or any other hierarchical structure that serves to diminish a person’s worth
-Our events are intentionally created for the marginalized aspects of our community, though every event is all-inclusive
-All members should encourage unheard voices while uplifting those most often heard
-Uphold the love ethic. Love for self, love for others.
-Queer Behavior is a dynamic organization. All of its aspects—including standards—evolve and adapt as necessary.
Points of Unity
- We create an environment of inclusion, community, and comradeship through our actions and words wherever we are involved, and hold ourselves and each other accountable to the standards of Queer Behavior.
- We not only critique targets like corporations, but we will also expose inconsistencies within our social groups and so-called “communities,” in order to grow more toward our radical ideals. Whenever possible, we will use theatrics, humor, and satire to communicate and critique ourselves.
- We encourage involvement and build friendships through campouts, parties, bike trips, etc., and create Safe Spaces as a way to cultivate trust, broaden our reach, and provide queer individuals with an honest and caring environment in which to grow as individuals and as a community.
- We will not tolerate racism, classism, misogyny, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism or any other hierarchical structure that serves to diminish a person’s worth. We reject hierarchical systems of control in all areas of society, and the co-opting of privilege embodied by aspirational assimilation.
- We assert that conversation is a vital component of the struggle against all forms of oppression. The surest way to win a fight is by building and maintaining alliances.
- We engage the queer community and the world at large with an ethic of love, respect, and openness. We seek to enlighten and be enlightened, embracing perpetual evolution and revolution in queer identity, and in life itself.
